sometime amateur gladiator

Background: Trish’s father was a magewright who worked at a local trinket
shop. She spent a lot of her formative years in the store, and became quite
familiar with the stock. Her biggest goal was to be a “big important magewright”
like her dad (who was really as menial a menial as you can get).
In her preteen years, she did odd jobs around the shop.
The Cannith who owned the place paid her in packs of Magic: the Gathering cards.
A clever girl, she managed to trade the rares into a decent playable deck, and
entered the local tournament scene. By the time she was sixteen, she’d made
quite a name for herself among the Sharn nerd elite. She even met Urza once, and
had a signed Urza’s Underpants limited framed on her wall.
In her middle teens, she spent her summers working at
the local comic shop. The Sivis who owned the place paid her in new issues, and
whatever card games were gathering dust on the shelf. This worked to her
advantage, as she discovered Legends of the Five Rings, and found her life’s
calling.
The summer of her eighteenth birthday, she packed her
bags, put together the only decent Duck Clan deck in fifteen known planes, and
journeyed to Rokugan, where she traded her potion-making skills in exchange for
intense L5R training, and ultimately, a place in the all-Rokugan tournament. The
only non-native in the tournament, it caused quite a stir when she made the
finals, and eventually, the game came down to two.
Soduko, the champion of Crab Clan, was infuriated that
she was not only winning, but using a non-existent clan to do it. When Trish
came out on top, the Crab ninja threw down his cards and renounced the game as
an insult to his homelands (two years earlier, he had quit competitive Heroclix
with the same declaration, so most people tended to ignore his tantrums).
Although it was meant to be a story tournament, no one
much wanted Duck Clan to be the guiding force in Rokugani politics for the next
year (especially since it didn’t exist), so they offered Trish a full
scholarship to Sigil Prep instead.
Trish is a favorite among her fellow freshmen, although
she spends much of her time with a nerdly clique composed of
Lewis Skelnuk, Jack
Solon, Zathran, and her old rival Soduko. She is also a good friend of
Cado Lost
Mountain, and often joins him in the gladiatorial pits. She’s sort of squishy
for a gladiator, but she knows how to control a battlefield.
Appearance: Trish is slight, about five and a quarter feet. She has dusty
blonde hair and a smattering of freckles. Pretty, if not astoundingly
attractive, although she tends to dress casual, in baggy jeans, long-sleeved
t-shirts, and often those toboggan caps with the cartoon eyes and ears on them.
She usually carries her backpack around, and it is
usually full of potions and alchemicals. And Magic cards, some black-and-white
Rokugani comics, and some energy drinks.
Role-playing Trish: Trish is a fan girl, big into gaming, manga, and
R-Pop. She’s friendly, and not easily
shaken (at least not negatively). When she loses her cool, it isn’t in anger or
fear. It’s when she discovers a new rare in her latest CCG pack, or when she
meets a celebrity. She’s crush-blind, not recognizing the crushes she receives
from a couple of PCs, nor the crushes she has. It’s obvious to everyone else,
but she just blushes and wonders why she can’t keep her mind on her work.
Being unrestrained by cash (the scholarship covers her
lab fees) or time (handwave), she makes a lot of potions, and is likely to have
level-appropriate potions on request. She makes a lot of her spending money by
supplying other students with basic potion needs.
