Volo's Student's Guide to

minor materials

(One of the major concepts behind Sigil Prep's multiverse is that 'If it exists in D&D --or ever has-- it exists in the Preppiverse'.  From Blackmoor to Eberron, from stapled pamphlets to 4e hardbacks.  Certainly, it uses the current rules set, but it pays tribute to the past.  Every setting coexists, and all the baggage that comes with it.  However, there's some baggage --notably in the form of deities-- that comes without a setting.  So I came up with a few minor 'settings' to accommodate the various real-world pantheons (and fictional pantheons from Complete Warrior, Frostburn, Stormwrack, et al.), that have popped up over the years.  Not all have actually figured into gameplay, but they're there, if'n you want to worship, meet, or, what the hells, party with the Finnish gods).

Babylon
(Babylonian Mythos; DDG1/Sandstorm): They aren’t all that advanced. They don’t have bombards or crossbows, or even catapults. Still, Tiamat seems to like the place, so it can’t be all bad.

Camelot/Sherwood
(Arthurian Mythos; DDG1): It’s “Camelot” if you’re into knights, “Sherwood” if you’re into outlaws. This world isn’t big on magic (oh, it’s there, but you can count the true wizards on one hand), but it’s mighty big on nobility and chivalry.

Estonia
(Finnish Mythos; DDG1): Yeah, I’m just going to admit a lack of even rudimentary knowledge of medieval Finnish culture and just note that they share a lot of deities with the Forgotten Realms.

Frostfell
(Frostfell Pantheon; Frostburn): Frozen tundra world haunted by prehistoric megabeasts, giants, and a very, very overprotective dad (see Rahariel).

Inhabitants of Frostfell

Ol' Fluffy (Fiendish Paragon Winter Wolf of Legend):  A legendary monster on Rahariel's home plane of Frostfell.  Unlike other unique horrors, Ol' Fluffy has little to no interest in battling adventurers.  He attends conventions with other monstrous beasts on occasion.

Gaul
(Celtic Mythos; DDG1): Laden with Druids, stone rings, wild hunts, and bards (lots and lots and lots of bards).

Heliopolis
(Egyptian Mythos; DDG1/Sandstorm): Mostly desert and rivers, Heliopolis is built around several settlements, which are built around several pyramids. The Sphinx statue’s nose was recently chiseled off because somebody *cough*King Nutninkamen*cough* made a bad joke.

Lovecraftia
(Cthulhu Mythos; DDG1): As advanced as that Red Masque world, but threatened by things that make illithids look cuddly.

The Low World
(Indian Mythos; DDG1): The inhabitants consider the material plane to be the lowest plane of their cosmos.

Melniboné
(Melnibonean Mythos; DDG1): Ruled through sorcerous might, and protected by the Eternal Champion.

Midgard
(Norse Mythos; DDG3): Where Vikings come from. Also, the most kick-butt pantheon of gods ever to murder your pantheon. This place is pretty violent, but they have good beer that will (like the Midgardians) kick your ass.

Nehwon
(Nehwon Mythos; DDG1): Notable for the city of Lankhmar, and its inhabitants Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. Briefly a member of our athletic conference.

Nippon
(Japanese Mythos; DDG1): Founded in feudalism, codes of honor, sneaky ninjas, noble samurai, and cartoons about people with big eyes who yell a lot.  (see also: Rokugan, Kara-Tur.  I've got these jokes covered)

Olympia
(Greek mythos; DDG3): See individual entry

Six Nations
(Amerindian Mythos; DDG1): With few of the sorts of villages we find in most planes, the Six Nations consist of smaller tribal nations (more than six), which are often nomadic, and those who aren’t live in simpler structures.

Sumeria
(Sumerian Mythos; DDG1): Strongly related to Babylon, but Tiamat doesn’t like it as much.

Toltec
(Mesoamerican Mythos; DDG1): Thickly grown jungle nation big on pyramids and human sacrifice. Most noteable as the home plane of Telteca, the owner and barmistress of Necrophilia, in downtown Sigil East.

Wasteland
(Wasteland Pantheon; Sandstorm): A hot, wasted desert world with little water and many deadly creatures. There’s also some spillover worship of the Babylonian and Egyptian gods here.

Inhavitants of Wasteland

Opdular (human paladin-10/scion of Tem-et-Nu-10):  Legendary hippo-fighter from the Wasteland.

The Waters
(Waters Pantheon; Stormwrack): The Waters is a world of ocean, dotted by islands. The largest is only the size of Xen’drik or so. Volcanic activity may raise or sink the smaller ones. Beware unscrupulous real estate salesmen.

Wuxia
(Chinese Mythos): See individual entry
